I want to make my own board and batten shutters....simple enough. Just inquiring some recomendations for what kind of wood to use. These will be exterior and should prime them or just latex the heck out em to protect them?

Poplar, white oak, cedar, redwood, teak, mahogany. There are many choices. Many preferences. I would go with poplar.
By all means, the shutters should be primed, then painted with latex paint.
