I am going to install a hardwood floor in my 11 x 14 dining room. Does it matter in which direction the floor runs?
Meaning, should it run the lenght of the shorter distance, or the longer distance, or is it a matter of personal preference?
Thank you for your help.

From all that I read there were two recommendations that kept coming up. One, to lay it prependicular to the joists and the other to lay it parallel to the largest window/light source. My recommendation would be to follow the joist related recommendation unless your subfloor is rock solid.

Hardwood flooring should be installed perpendicular (across) the joists. The joists support the flooring.

when I found that the old fur floor was too soft for refinishing. I installed new floor on top of the old floor. The subfloor is also T& G 45 degrees from the joist and the old floor is perpendicular (across) to the joists. My new floor was installed perpendicular to the old floor. It has been three years and it looks just like it was done last week.
