Is it necessary to have a "valid" card in the receiver (RCA) before you can point a DirectTV dish using the signal strength meter on the menu?

In most DirecTv receivers, no, you just set the receiver
to the pointing screen and point the dish. Then you call to have the system authorised.
With Dishnetwork, I know the receiver will not work without the card installed.
