Can you help me ? I have a John Coyle, mahaghony dresser, and I have knocked my hot iron over onto the top surface.

This has left a definate mark where the varnish has lifted and lightened the area, but it hasnt broke or cracked the top layer, can I use anything without having to strip it all down.

(The only way I can explain it is like when a hot drink leaves a ring mark on a table)

Help !!

You might try rubbing the affected area with baking soda and water paste to see if it removes the white mark. Always rub in direction of wood grain. Sometimes, rubbing area with mayonnaise (not salad dressing) and letting set removes white mark. Sometimes a fine automotive abrasive compound such as Turtle Wax Polishing compound and scratch remover can be used. Use across the entire top for uniformity of sheen.

If the finish has actually lifted, then finish will have to be removed and replaced.

Another option is simply to set a decorative item over the affected area and forget about it.
