84 Oldsmobile Delta 88: 144k. Resurrected from the junkyard in 1996. Still runs and flies through the NYS dyno with ease on the first try with numbers that rival a car half its age.

My friends 1991 Shadow 2.2 which is going to get a fuel pump tomorrow. ORIGINAL almost everything, and flies through the dyno test. Also delivers excellent fuel mileage and has never gotten him stuck until this past Thursday.

1978 Dodge Aspen 225 "Super 6" that I picked out for him that ran for 2 years with doing nothing but tuneups and oil changes. Paid 600 bucks for the car. He junked it running in perfect shape because he didn't need it :(

My grandfather's 1979 305 Caprice which was my automotive learning shop on wheels. He paid 1000 bucks for it in 1983, I sold it for parts for 300 in 1996, never failed him once in 13 years. I made him a bet in 1991 that if I couldn't get it running for under 100 bucks I'd buy it. I got it running with a new timing chain and gears, water pump, fuel pump, tuneup, oil and filter for 80 bucks.

I have MANY more, these are just highlights :). I've also fixed numerous pieces of yard equipment which were given to me and I still use YEARS later :).

I'm just a handyman at heart :).

1985 VW Fox GL, 4 speed, original engine with +163,000. Replaced the alternator, clutch, battery, radiator, worked out a pesky timing issue, now she passes emissions like newer cars and with a new clear coat she looks great. I paid 2k for her in 1991 and will look forward to many more years, runs like a champ!

My coworker's 1988 Caprice Estate Wagon with an Olds 307. Running with a junkyard engine from Elizabeth Montgomery's (that's right :) ) 1987 Caprice. Had 135k on it when he got it. Now over 220k. Paid 50 bucks for the engine, cleaned it up and installed it.

Runs every day for 40 miles back and forth on grueling Brooklyn Queens Expressway traffic in all weather. Has not let us down once!

I just retired a 96 Corsica with 145K on it. I had it for 5 years.
BAD POINTS:
Last year timming belt/chain broke, now a timming gear broke, this past year it started to nickle and dime me.
GOOD POINTS:
No rust just paint peeling off.
Without a garge it ALWAYS started, even though I negleted regular maint.
Never replaced a light.
Brake pads only once with an avg. of 50 miles a day.
With front wheel drive it pulled me through the snow before the plows were out.

1985 Chevy Scottsdale, 305 Q-jet, 220K miles before dropping in rebuilt engine. Much of that was pulling a trailer doing service work. Still driving it, avg probably 100 to 150 miles a day. It would have gone more than 220K before the engine swap, but the last 2 years of the engine's life were spent in hard use with NO air filter (long story). It finally got to smoking, so I changed it out. It still ran like a champ though, lol. Nothing like a V8 chevy :).

Daniel, I am on your side, as I have seen some absolutely unbelievable miles come out from the tried and true ford 302 v8.

My mother bought brand new a 72 ford maverick with the 302(which is currently undergoing a full restro in my garage) she drove the thing all over the planet for 20 solid years without any major problems at all.

I bought a multi port injected 86 mustang gt with the 5.0 HO 7 years ago with 100k all ready on the odo. 5 years and 55k miles later, I assumed that it was ready to break down, since Cars usually start to get unreliable with that kind of milage. over the next 2 years I wound up going through at least 3 cars that were newer that it that were designed to replace it--I kept the stang for weekend race/cruise use but it wound up becoming a permanent driver because my newer car wouldn't stop breaking down. My father as well piled the miles up on it.

It now has 183k miles, and the valve covers or intake manifold has never been off, original EVERYTHING under the hood except for water pump and alternator. I cooked the tranny a couple of years back, but it couldn't hold up under the occasional strip duty the car saw.

Anyway I just bought a newer toyota tacoma (my first foreign vehicle ever) and it only has 54k on the odo, and I am hoping to pull off another 200k with it so I can finally truly turn my mustang and my maverick into weekend warriors.

Current cars:

1992 Chevy S-10 pickup. 2.8L engine with 124K miles. I bought it from the original owner about 18 mos. ago w/ 94K on it. Other than a throttle body gasket and a heater core (at 100K miles) it's never had more than regular maintenance.

1991 Dodge Grand Caravan. 3.3L engine. 164K miles. With the exception of the transmission, it's been very reliable. The previous owner replaced the trans @ 80K miles & I replaced it again at 135K miles.

Previous cars:

1976 Chevy Monte Carlo. It had 265K on it when I bought it. The original 305 still ran ok, but it used a lot of oil. I installed a mild performance 350 & rebuilt the transmission. I drove the car for another 70K miles. I eventually tired of the car & junked it. It had about 335K on it then & the original GM silver paint was still in pretty good condition. I pulled the engine before I junked the car. I sold it for $400 & got paid to install it in to a late '70s Blazer.

1964 Chevy Impala. 283 with a powerglide trans. It was originally my grandmother's car. It had 99K on it when I got it & 102K on it when I sold it. Ran like a new car.

1978 VW Scirocco. This was the last car my late father owned. He bought it for $600 in 1987. It had 135K on it at the time. Originally from Michigan, the car was a real rustbucket. We replaced every bolt-on body part except the hood. We also repaired the floor pans & rear frame rails. He drove the car for 5 years after that & it was still running great when I junked it (more rust!) after he died in 1991.

My friend in the shop's 1981 Cutlass he got from his girlfriend's son. He was in his 70's when he got the car.

It was a 231 V6 but it ran forever. When it finally died, we rebuilt the engine, after the engine builder screwed it up the first time. I spent nights and weekends cleaning parts and working like a dog to help this guy.

The car had to have 400k on it, he drove it everywhere. We never knew though, because we kept swapping speedos on the car. Between he and I, we had enough 1978 and up Cutlass parts to build another car.

I JUST sold some of those parts on Ebay this past winter! LOL.

The gentleman who owned this car died in 1994. Before he died, he painted the car again and it had 442 rims. Our original plan was to update it to a 1987-1988 Cutlass so you couldn't tell. We never commandeered all the parts.

This fellow was as anal as I am about maintenance. His cars always ran flawlessly.

I know a parts man in Texas with 500k on the ORIGINAL engine in his 1977 Camaro 350. It doesn't knock, bang or use a drop of oil and delivers great fuel economy. He is probably one of the most knowledgable parts men I know in the industry.

64 Falcon Sprint w/260 V8, 4 speed- bought new in Jan 64 and had 134000 when red-light runner totaled it in 95. Paid $3011 for it and sold it for 2700 to Falcon parts place. Was all original Ford(upholstry, carpet and dash pad NOS in 90) but battery, radiator, water pump, hoses, tires and locking gas cap. Both our kids came home from hospital (son in 68- daughter in 76), and both learned to drive in it.
77 Toyoto pu w/20R and 5 speed bought in 87 w/ no smog, clutch and flywheel torched, for 500. fixed those problems, and sold it in 91 w/230000. Last I heard, it was still running great in Oregon for my neighbors grandson.
91 Escort currently has 188000 w/ only serpentine belt (once) and timing belt (twice). Got this from daughter when tranny started making tinny? noise after she had tranny fluid changed (in 97- probably for 1st time-she bought it used) Tranny shops said had to be rebuilt for 1500-1700, and since blue book was 2100, I said I'll drive it til it quits-85000miles ago. Still makes same noise, but shifts great and don'tleak/use fluid. Thinking about donating to local charity this summer.
88 F150 w/ 213000- 5.0 w/AOD- fluid has never been changed-neither owners manual or repair manual recommends it. Ford replaced ing module some years agoand I just had TPS replaced. Truck was bought w/ 61000 mi. from company I had worked for in agri business. They pulled heavy farm supply tanks and bins around with it and then I used it for my building construction business until I retired last year-hauling building materials, pulling concrete trailers, etc. All vehicles had oil and filters changed at 5-6000 miles and regular tune-ups.

Brothers 89 Ford Ranger 252k, new tranny(5sp) & clutch. Oil every 5k. drives it 250m a day to work & back.

Ouch! You're right, it was the 301 V8. :-) I drove it to a service
station where my wife worked and it had stopped squealing
too badly at that point. The next morning the mechanic said
the crank was seized but refused to drop the pan and see
how many journals were bad. I didn't know my local Chevy
dealer was equipped to repair the crank in thier shop.

That would have been an easy repair on that one. Could have had the old Poncho going again in no time :)

My parents had a couple of Bonnevilles of that vintage. A 1978 with a 301 and a 1980 with a 265. Both were great cars. We sold the 78 to buy the 80, because my dad sold it to a coworker for more than we paid for it in 1977 and the 1980 got stolen in 1982...I'd probably still own that car today! :)

To credit the dealer I talked to, he said they could have
dropped the pan and tested the bearings, replacing only the one
or more that had gone bad. No credit to the service station
because despite my asking them to push the car into the
work bay in the morning for the obvious reason, several
people told me it was driven onto the lift after sitting all
night. If I had the ready cash I'd readily pick another late
70's Bonny just for a second car. :)

I never scrap cars, even the parts ones. I usually salvage all that is good and sell off the rest.

My grandfather had a 1979 Caprice with a 305. When it started to knock, I told him I'd rebuild the motor, but since he was retiring, he told me he didn't need the car anymore. I was out for a walk one night and saw another 79 Caprice with a smashed front end. I left the guy a note and he called me three days later and bought my grandfather's Caprice for 300 bucks.

Considering this was 1996 and my grandfather got the Chevy in 1983 for 1000 bucks, I'd say he got his money's worth :).

First....
My 72 Chevy Cheyenne, that I have had since 78. 331K miles with an overhaul at 187k, still with the original TH350 trans. The air conditioning compressor finally failed last year. I'll keep it a while longer.

86 Camaro 2.8L went 203K. 2.8's arn't supposed to do that. The only parts replaced on it were 3 battery's, distributor gasket (two times), alternator and the intake air sensor. It ate plug wires until I bought those life time 9mm napa wires. It still had the original clutch. Finally the in tank fuel pump went out and the throw out bearing was squeeling, so I sold it to a friend dirt cheep, and he is still driving it.

I would've kept the Pontiac, except it was winter and I lived
in an apartment in Liverpool NY. Working outside was NOT
an option! :D Someone told me the problem with the Caprice
was weak valve stems and that that was a common problem
with 305's. Since it was bought as a winter/summer/spring/fall
rat, I didn't feel like pursuing it further as long as it kept the
oil consumption reasonable. :) The Pontiac was a Brougham,
and I bought it used off a kid for $700. He was going to school,
and his parents wanted it out of the yard. The inside was in
great shape and it has power everything.

I replaced the Pontiac with a 76 Riveria with a 455 CID
v8 and drove that for a few years till a freeze plug came out
on the thruway between Rochester and Syracuse. I drove it
all the way home before it quit running. (I didn't realize the
freeze plug came out till the next day when AMCO towed the
car to the shop to check the tranny. I thought the rapping noise
was coming from a loose flywheel because the temp gauge never
indicated an overheat when the freeze plug dropped out.) I sold
it for $200 because the body had recently been restored by a
really good body shop in Syracuse. The thing I liked about the
Riveria was the speed warning sensor in the Speedometer
that would tell you if you were going too fast. You wonder
why good ideas like that get lost and cupholders become must
have options! After that all I've bought have been Buicks -
A Skyhawk, A Century, and now a Regal GS.

:D Every one I've talked to says the 3.1's are better than
the 3.8's mileage wise, and I should expect 18-22 mpg
with my 3.8. Except my car never listens because it
routinely gets 30mpg on the highway. I took it from Indiana
back to NY last year and got almost 35 mpg. (That was a
12 hour drive with 2 half-hour pitstops!) This year I'm
going to pay more attention to it. City driving is pretty
good, I can go almost a week on a tank of gas between
the house and work if the wife drives it!

Shoot...I can get 30-31 MPG with my 3.8liter in my park avenue, and that's not a small light car either. Has all options. The 3.8 seems to be a pretty darn good engine so far. The park avenue, however, has too many bell and whistles, and some of them are beginning to show their age and malfunction. One thing I've always wondered about the 3800's is what gives
them that characteristic sound that the 3100's don't have? It's
like a Rochester Quadrajet or a Holley 4-barrel at WOT. Is
the intake manifold tuned or just a wide open space on the other side of the throttle?

Probably in the intake or exhaust note design.

If you think that's throaty, get behind an old GM V8 :)

Lastest work beater--1991 v-6 beretta--wifes old car. 143k, have owned since 28k. Oil every 3k, tranny fluid/filter--twice, brakes/rotors/calipers/wheel cylinders--twice, tires--twice, battery--once, alternator--once, waterpump--twice, struts/mounts--once, fuel filter--twice, belt--twice, hoses--once, plugs--once, O2 sensor--once, several coolant/oil leaks--corrected, power steering just started to leak at pump, and the rack has some play in it. Seems like alot--but none of them were expensive to fix--and it starts everyday of the year, gets 24-28mpg, and does not use a drop of oil between changes. Recently, replaced the valve cover gaskets and the inside of them looked brand new--no sludge at all! Oh, ya, the AC and rear defroster have not worked for years! LOL!

My '86 Ford Bronco II 2.9L V6 had over 255,000 mi. and my current war wagon 2001 Chev Malibu 3.1L V6 has 167,000 and still going, shooting for 300,000 !
It all depends on how you take care of it.

Hey ChristopherT....I love the sound of a Quadrajet at full throttle when the secondaries open up and sounds like it's sucking in the hood......Oh yea............

I was given this truck two years ago because the owner's wife was tired of not having a/c. It has 191,000 miles on it and I drive it 5x a week, sixty miles a day and have only replaced the tires, brakes, alternator, belt, filter, and a steel brake line.

'54 Morris Minor 1000 - 212k and all original except brakes and 6v battery!

I also have a '59 "1000" engine that was rescued from a lumber saw in Red Hill Virginia that I purchased as a spare but, alas, my MM broke in two as all of them tended to do after time.

Another vehicle that I loved, although it wasn't real high mileage, was my Daf Daffodil (Holland)....this had a two cylinder 4-stroke and was belt driven....to tighten the belt, you used the lug wrench through a hole in the rear bumper and wrenched the differential rearwards to tighten the belt. This was a great car and actually held four people.

My '85 chevy service truck with 305 and that nice sounding quadrajet has around 300k on it. The original engine started leaking oil pretty bad at around 220k, so I got another engine ready and swapped it in place of it. (It's a service truck, couldn't afford the down-time it would have taken to fix all the leaks). It still ran great though. I got it in 1995, drove it about 2 years and made it into a service truck, and have been pulling a trailer with it almost daily (meaning all day on service calls...in town driving) ever since. Rebuilt the tranny a couple of years ago because of a bad bearing. This truck still has a lot of miles to give me, but it doesn't owe me a single thing.

And the air will freeze you out in short order, even on a hot day.

Here I am thinking my Caravan was doing great. 3.8 L. It had 280,000kms when the odometer quit. Drove it for 3 more years so I'm assuming maybe another 40-50k.
That works out to approx a paltry 200k miles. It was an junker by that time with bungee cords on the doors and rust everywhere. it ran perfectly, just needed a third tranny.

My brother has a Saturn, (don't know the engine details), that gets forty MPG routinely. He's checked it six ways to Sunday trying to find a mistake in his calculations because he couldn't believe it at first. But, it comes out the same each time. It's only got a bit over a hundred thousand on it. My '89 Jeep, however, has around three hundred thousand on it, gets about twenty five MPG, and still runs fine.

91 chevy cavalier w/ 250000+ miles on it. Not sure of the actual miles cause the speedometer was broken for several months and never advanced the odometer!

My 1988 Buick LeSabre went 312,000 miles before my son sold it, it still ran great. 3800 (3.8 liter) Buick engines are the best ones ever to have come out of an American car manufacturer in my opinion. I also own a '99 Regal with the 3800 and had an '88 LeSabre 2 door that I wish I hadn't sold.

I have a 2002 saturn and we ALWAYS get over 40 mpg. When it was new, we were getting close to 50mpgs. I don't tell people that because they think I'm lying but since you brought it up......... Driving around town we get about 33mpgs. Its amazing. We now have 4 saturns in the family and they are the best cars we have owned. (no I don't work for Saturn)

i have a 2001 kia sephia with 130,000 miles on it. runs like its brand new. only replaced the tires, brakes, alt, battery, clutch bearing, front right wheel bearing. has never left me stranded on the side of the road. oh yea...this year for inspection, it needed a cat and rear seals. i love my car. drive it 80 miles a day to and from work. 36 miles per gallon. i bought the car new for 11,000. i have put mobil1 in it since day one. put a tornado in it....cant really notice a difference.....guess that was a waste of $60. plan on changing the timing and serp belts soon. i love my car.

my next car will be a kia.

I had a 94 geo prism that had quite a few miles on it and also an 86 volvo station wagon (that my sister crashed). But my parents use to have an 85 Chevy van that really had a lot on it from long road trips.

OK, the thread is tempting.
1959 Mercedes Diesel, 525,000 miles on it, 42 MPG
1961 Austin Healey, 220,000 miles, 40 MPG

I'm driving a 2002 Toyota Prius. Getting 45 mpg running the air conditioner all the time. I do 50/50 city/hwy. When I don't run the A/C or the heater I get 52 mpg.
My parents have a 2004 Toyota Prius, they get about 40 mpg, but they are mostly city.

I had a 1984 BMW 325e that I ran for 253,000 miles. It looked and ran like new at a quarter million miles, and I foolishly let family members talk me into trading it off after 15 years of ownership.

I then bought a new 1999 Mercury Mystique LS with the 2.5 L Duratec V-6 and automatic trans. I currently have 232,000 miles on this car, and it still runs like new. No detectable oil usage.

Both cars averaged 30 mpg pretty consistently. I commute 100 miles daily to work, and often 250 miles on weekend trips to see family.

My wife bought one also. Mechanically the car was great but each window and sun roof had to have the seals replaced 1-2 under warranty. The dash kept curling up and was replaced or worked on 3-4 times. Would have kept the car longer but after the warranty ran out and the same issues kept popping up .......... time to trade.

I assume your car suffered none of these problems

I bought my daughter a 1992 Saturn SL1, she had 165,000 miles on it. Still ran fine, but finally got rid of it when it wouldn't pass smog. Not one door ding either with those plastic door panels, still looked almost new!
