Hello errodri61. Welcome to my Gas Appliances forum.
Turning off the gas at the meter involves me knowing a lot more details. Is this a single family residence, condo, apt or multiple unit complex, etc.
The shut off valve will have a place usually on the left side of it for an adjustable wrench to fit on it. This valves rotating part will be facing upwards inline with the pipe. Turning it cross wise to the pipe turns off the gas.
The hex or allen head screw is NOT to be touched, turned or in any way turned or removed. Leave it as it is. It is there only for a trained service person to lube the valve while the gas is still on to the meter. Tampering with it will cause major problem or injury, etc.
If you have any doubts as to what to do involving the gas meter, contact the local gas supplier. Do not trun or tamper with their gas meter equipment for any reason without their knowledge.

the valve is how you describe it, on the left of the meter and it does have the adjustable to put a wrench. all i need to do is, close this valve long enogh to cap the end of a pipe used at one time for a dryer.... OH is on a single, house!!

Hello: errodri61
Based on the additional info provided in your reply, close the gas meters inlet valve by turning it cross wise to the pipe.
Cap the unused dryers gas line. If the gas pipe is black iron or steel, install a pipe cap using oil only on the threads, no pipe tape is required and I will not do into details on that issue.
Oil is fine enough, any type of oil period. Pipe caps are available at all hardware stores. Most gas supply pipes for dryers are 1/2 diameter.
If the is an already installed shut off valve on that gas line to the dryer, it can be removed and the cap installed to replace it.
Or there are caps made specifically to cap shut off valves without removing them. Your local privately owner non nationally named hardware dealers and stores are the best sources for parts for this purpose, in my opinion.
Once the pipe is capped, slowly and carefully turn back on the gas meters valve and relight the pilots on any other gas appliances which have pilots.

Hello: errodri61
Yes. Any type of thread compound is okay to use since you already have it. If none was available already or you did not already have some and you had to buy some simply for this one time usage, oil would have been fine. End of that issue.
Hope you had success with the project.
