I've got an exterior wood door, approx 1.5" thick, that is starting to split along the side and bottom sections. The widest crack is about the width of a fingernail, but you can see light through it. The door gets direct morning sun, in Phoenix, so I want to use something as durable as possible.

Other than standard putty or caulk, what's best to use? I'm thinking something along the lines of an epoxy would be durable and prevent the cracks from getting larger.

I hope mean the cracks are as wide as a fingernail is thick or about 1/32 to 1/16 inch. If the door is painted, then caulk would be my choice because it would be inclined to expand and contract with the door. Wood putty or epoxy filler would be rigid and may open somewhat when the door expands, or be expelled when the door contracts. Sounds to be a moisture problem. If you could remove the door and paint the bottom edge, you may be able to slow its deterioration.

Hope this helps.
