I have an enormous boulder in the way of a new deck building project. I've located the bottom which is in the ground approx. 6 inches--not a "loose impediment" by any stretch. The rock is approx. 3ft x 2ft on the top surface and tapers off toward the bottom. I've tried prying it out of the hole with some luck, but once I get it out, have no idea what to do with it.
My though is obviously to break it into manageable pieces. Will a hammerdrill do the trick. I'm not sure what type of rock it is, but I can say it is not concrete.
Any help/ideas will be greatly appreciated.
Thank you.

The rental yards and Home Depot will rent you a Brute electric jackhammer. It'll wear you out, but will should make quick work of the boulder. I've used one to break up concrete paving several times and once to dig a hole to plant a tree in my front yard.

Dig a hole and bury it.
Might be useful as a landscape feature. May you could give it away to a landscaper.

Thanks for the ideas. I wasn't expecting the second one at all--creative.
