I want to install hardwood over an uneven plywood subfloor. Can I pour a leveling compound on the floor and install over that? Can I nail through the compound or would I have to glue? I don't want to install more underlayment as this will raise the floors too much.

A leveling compound can be used to take dips and sags out of floors. A solid 3/4" hardwood floor should be nailed into a 3/4" plywood (or OSB acceptable) subfloor. If you purchase a wood flooring product that requires a glue down installation, follow manufacturer's directions.

Thank you for the reply but I'm still not sure whether I can nail through the leveling compound.
Also, after reading some of the other posts about uneven floors, I am understanding that the unevenness might couse the floors to spring. I was only concerned originally about correcting the uneveness to allow furniture to sit straight, etc. Is it only floating floors that would spring?

I used Ardex feather edge. And yes it can be nailed through.
