I am installing a new casement window in our kitchen and I want to add a sill to it. Can anyone give me some help on how to do this or a web site.

Thanks,

Sorry Harlan, I overlooked you post.

I assume that you are going to make the sill out of wood and want it projecting a couple of inches past the wall to create a small shelf.

First question -- what tools do you have or have access to? That might limit your options.

Check with a local lumberyard, in the trim section. They probably have a premade length of window sill that you can cut to shape and install. The other option is to use a router and shape your own edge on the sill material.

Before you do any cutting, plan exactly how you are going to finish the entire opening.

One option would be to picture frame the entire opening -- top and both sides -- with casing (beveled, streamline, colonial, or whatever).

Or you can just leave the corners of the opening as a sheetrock corner.

Once you decide WHAT you want to do, it is just a matter of starting at the window and working your way out with the finish.

Thanks Lefty,

I think I have all the necessary tools. Yes I would project it out a couple of inches. Is there a special way that it should be attached to the window?

It doesn't attach to the window -- just butts up against it and you caulk the joint. Attach it with finish nails driven down into the 2X4 framing of the rough opening. If you are planning on casing the inside of the entire widow opening, install the header piece first, then the sill, then the 2 side jambs are cut so they will help keep the header and sill in place.
