hi there, im trying to paint my breakfast nook in two different off white colors. one is about 3 shades darker than the other. how do I keep a straight edge with one color so it doesnt look messy and stray into the other color on the trim and ceiling? I tried using an edger and handpainting the area up to where the roller meets the edges, but it isnt close enough and looks terrible. Hellpp!!

Is the trim caulked? If not, caulking it will make the flow of the paint from one surface to another look nicer by eliminating the shadows.

Paint the trim first, then the walls and ceiling. Run the trim color onto the wall just a tad, then paint on it with the wall color. Get some blue painter's tape and tape it off to paint the walls. Run the brush up to the edge of the tape, then roll. Once the paint is dry to the touch, remove the tape.

Paint the ceiling next, then the walls. The little bit of ceiling color that gets left on the wall is not as noticeable as wall paint on the ceiling. Taping the ceiling does not work well. Just practice. Try a trim brush, 2" tapered to do this part. Don't do too much at a time so that you can roll onto the brushed area while it is still wet.

Hope this helps.

I didn't use all of your suggestions, but enough of them so that when I tackle the kitchen its not going to be such a fiasco. It turned out great and looks very professional. Thanks, Tonnie

Get yourself a good trim brush, cut on a slant to cut in. With a steady hand you can apply an even bead of paint along the edge of walls and ceiling. Roll while the area you cut in is still wet.
