I am kind of a pack rat when it comes to recycling wood. A lot of what I keep is under 8 feet (trim, moulding, etc.) The wife's pet name for me is Fire Hazard ;)
I have a very small workshop with some ceiling room which I use for storing 2 x 4's, etc.
Anybody seen or have plans for wood racks/shelves/bins?

Here's an illustrated article on garage shelving from Reader's Digest "The Family Handyman" magazine that may help:

As for hanging lumber storage from the ceiling, plain old 2X4s hanging from ceiling joists with a piece nailed between them spaced whatever length apart that you want will work, as long as you leave enough head clearance under them.
Good Luck!
