Old bottles may be permanently etched from minerals in water and soil. Some old bottles in glass museums, especially those that have been unearthed are especially pitted, etched, and cloudy or stained. Bottles can be filled with water and drop in a denture tablet. Another method is to fill with white vinegar and let set. CLR (calcium, lime, rust remover) may be effective, as well. Give cleaner time to work. A bottle brush can also be used. Use a blow dryer to dry interior of bottles.

I've cleaned the inside of old bottles with some dishwasher detergent (Cascade) and very hot water.
