We have completely gutted our master bath because of extensive water damage on the floor. We removed the tub and are installing a modular Sterling 60" shower unit. The floor and base unit are level on the floor but when we put up the back wall of the unit, it doesn't fit up against the wall snugly. This makes all three of the walls of the unit not fit. We think we need to put a "shim" behind the back wall of the unit somehow. Is this correct and what do we use and how should we do this? The top of these wall are made to fit under the sheetrock. We are planning to put vinyl moulding at the edge of this.

It appears that your floor may be level but your walls are out of plumb. Check them and see what is going on. I'm sure that this is your problem. Since this is made to go directly against the studs, you may have to install an additional stud next to those existing to ensure that they are plumb and straight from side to side.

Sterling is a good unit but it is true that you must have straight walls as well as level floor to properly install.
