Hello,
We are about to replace the carpet in our house with hardwood. We have a 85lbs golden that is an indoor dog. Can someone please suggest types of wood to avoid and what would be best to not get scratched?
Thanks

Any wood floor will get scratches from a dog that size if its nails are not trimmed. Red oak will be one of the hardest. You can also go to www.nwfa.com for hardness charts with more details on other woods.

Harder woods tend to be less prone to denting from pressure. The issue with a dog is the finish. No finish is scratch free. The state of the art finishes that contain aluminum oxide or are top coated with aluminum oxide over layers of poly are scratch resistant, but no scratch proof. Keeping dog's nails trimmed will help. You can also purchase little vinyl nail coverings as well as little leather booties. But, if you love your dog, and that's most important, a few scratches here and there will just give your floor some character. Wood floors can always be refinished.

Finish is most important as twelve said !!!
A scratch on the finish is just as bad sometimes as a scratch on the floor.
I have 105LB rott. I keep his nails trimmed and haven't had much of an issue. I redid his room in maple and it still looks great years later.
Best of luck !!!
