Would some of you professional hardwood floor installers let me in on some of your techniques on the best method to install/fasten that next to last board (3/4" T & G) that comes into a wall where you cant use the powernailer or nail gun. This is the prefinished stuff so I think face nailing is out. Bollinger's book which I just purchased doesnt address this & most of his info deals with unfinished installation. I thought that you would drill a pilot hole at a funcky side angle and use a 8d nail over a joist.

I'm not a professional, but your way sounds exactly like I would handle it.

What we generally do is hand nail the last four rows pre drilling and nailing. The second to last row you are not able to hand nail ( can't get the bloody hammer in there) so we float the 2nd to last and face nail the last board so as not to have face nails but on 1 board. But i have seen guys that top nail the last 4 rows . It depends on the installer.

Why can't you get the hammer in for the 2nd to last row?

Say you have a 2 inch nail at a 45 degree angle to go in the tongue.
That makes it an inch and a half from the end of the board you are putting it in.
The hammer is about 4-5 inches long.
No room to hammer and have any movement.
Can't push the suckers in with a file.
Remember 2nd to last board is less than 2.25 inches from a wall. 3 if the wall is not undercut.
