Good Morning, i m new to this forum but have been reading a lot of the posts and the people who give there advice seem to be very knowledgeable. So my question is what is a better furnace to install a oil forced hot air system or a oil hot water system my daughter just purchased her first new home and it needs a new furnace. She can get a forced air system for 4000.00 or a hot water system for 8300.00 i need to know if the differance in price is worth it. The house has a basement that needs to be heated then a main floor with a catthdral ceiling and a loft with one bedroom.

Hello Bufflo,

What does the home already have for a heating system?

Looking at the bid price, I'm guessing it's a force air, and the cost is up more on the hot water system.

Hot water is a great system for "even" heat and quietness...

If she goes with hot water and pulls out the forced air system, your going to have a mess for a few days with the duct works being pulled out, holes to cover up, and new holes for the water pipe and base boards.

I'd stay with the forced air system. Lot of the newer system is MUCH better than they were 20 years ago as for "even" heat, quietness.

With forced air system, you can add a few things to it for more comfort in her home.

1- Central Air, no noisey window/wall a/c running, or having an eyesore in some room.

2- Humidifre for humidity in the cold dry winter months.

3- High Effiecent Air Cleaner like April Air, or Air Bear for better and cleaner air in the home if someone has some kind of allergy.

Type of Furnace?

I would go for the Trane XV90.. They have two stage heating with variable speed blower.

The two stage gives a lower heat on a mild days, and high output on the coldest day of the year. With lower heat, your not going to feell the "Blast" of heat when the system starts up, and it's quiet.

With the varible speed blower, it will use less power to run, and moves the air around at very low speed and helps filter it too.

Jay11j (although a die hard trane man) is right on the money. personally i feel that you obtain excellent temp control with the variable speed 90% furnace. i am not as familiar with oil as others such as kfield are, but am certain there is a unit that will give a comfort level close or equal to hot water with out the added cost. not sure if you have a/c up there in VT, but if so, a forced air system will be needed, although there are ductless a/c's available but they are not cheap
