we would like to remove the plaster coating above the wood fireplace mantle in our upstairs bedroom to expose the brick. what is the best way to do this? the house is 93 years old and the fireplace, though once functional, is now only decorative.

a hammer and a crow bar whack away, score along the edges with a knife to save on repairs later. it may not be face brick under there and have unfinhed joints.
