I've moved into a nice little spce with one weird deficiency. The walls of the shower are only tiled for 1.5' up from the bathtub.
Tiling the walls might be more work that I'm interested in, are there any other options such as vinyl or PVC sheeting or inserts that could be ordered or cut to fit?

You could go cultured marble, PVC sheets, melamine panels (cheap way). Check Home Depot for ideas or a good kitchen and bath store. Bring with you dimensions to give to a good salseman when you discuss this.
