 Exactly what is the difference between "wall joint compound" and "spackling paste" and in what circumstances should I use either?

Joint compound is for taping and mudding sheetrock when installed. You can also use it to fill and repair small holes and such. Spackling compound is more for filling small holes and such. There are many other uses for both, I am sure.
