I have a small bungalow, and just noticed the foundation block next to my front porch has a 3" gap at the bottom. Is this a something that is easily fixed, or do I have a major problem here? Any input appreciated.

Hi,
Can you give us more information? The block is broken? Is it reinforced concrete? is a concrete block foundation?

Thanks for the response. It's a broken masonry block. Also I noticed the broken area extends under the front porch about 2ft. which makes it difficult to get to. I was wondering if it would be repairable with mortar mix.

Hi,
The first thing you need to know is why the block broke. Mortar is just a face repair, but it will not repair the structure. And if is a concrete block, surely it has steel inside, so you can’t simply change it.

Hi, Thanks for the response. It may have broken because of water damage - the drainage from the roof is next to it. I don't know if there are any points where it goes right through to the crawl space - I'm hoping it doesn't. There is a splash plate there, but I'm going to get a long hose to attach to the downspout to direct the water away. Meanwhile, I've just built the earth up around the broken part. I can't afford an expensive repair job right now. Thanks again.

I just had another look at that block and it's not the actual block that's broken, but the concrete underneath it that's come away. I also noticed that on one side of the house, there is concrete underneath the blocks, but not on the other side.

I can't do that I'm afraid. Don't have a camera, or a scanner come to that. Thanks anyway.
