I want to install a stone tile backsplash on my kitchen wall. The problem is, it's drywall and I've been told that it's not a good idea to do this, since drywall can get wet and mushy.
Is there a way to treat the drywall first, rather than cut it away entirely and replace it with another material? (that will be difficult, since the cabinets and granite countertop are already installed!).

Thanks

prime and paint the drywall to seal it before you tile. you shouldn't have any moisture problems in a kitchen. that usually occurs in bathrooms because moisture gets through a bad grout line. after you have tiled and grouted, the grout lines should be sealed. 15 years ago we used to recommend monthly treatments of liquid silicone in bathrooms. i would think there are probably better products available today. ask your supplier what they recommend.

Hello & welcome to the forum. Sorry I missed your post, had a really busy wk. By all means seal your drywall, and tile away. I'd use white thinset to set the tile myself, mastic can bleed through some natural stones, that's my reasoning w/the thinset. I use versabond available from the orange box, it & some other brands have anti-sag formulas. Use spacers to prevent slipping during the set-up period.

Best of luck & let us know how it turns out.
