I recently was given an old oak office chair and planned to refinish it. Once I inspected it, I saw that it had motor oil soaked into the seat and partially up the back slats.
Can this be stripped and stained or should I seal it and paint it? Thanks so much for you advice.

It's probably a loosing propsition to remove old stains such as this, but you can try is you think it's worth the effort.
Soak the affected areas with paint thinner. Apply, let it soak in - apply some more.
Cover the area with talcum powder - apply more as it soaks through. Let stand overnight, brush off, wipe clean and see what you have.
