i have a 5 hp briggs that keeps cutting off after two or three minutes of running.. what can this be i disconnected the kill switch and it still continues

Need more info,
How old ? Points and Condensor or Electronic ignition? Does it have spark immediately after it dies? Will it re-start right away? After 10 or 15 minutes? Fresh gas? Has it been stored for a while?

oil doc the engine is approximately 9 yrs old. has great compression, and has fire after it dies. the gas is fresh and sometimes it will run for 10 minutes. the engine had been stored for 3 or four yrs. but ran occasionally . it also was stored with fuel stabilizer in the tank.

Is this a horizontal or vertical shaft engine? If vertical, remove the carb bowl and clean out the carb.

Does it re-start right away ? If it will only re-start after it sits a while, I would possibly lean towards a valve clearance problem, usually exhaust, or a clogged fuel cap. What style carb is on it, diaghram or float ?

this is a vertical engine mounted on a go-cart. the thing will sometimes crank right up and sometimes not after it dies. where is the carb bowl? is it in the tank?

A vertical engine on a go-cart? Are you sure it's not horizontal (shaft coming out the side)? If it is horizontal, there probably is no float bowl (a few had them, but most do not).

Easy way to remember Horizontal from Vertical... Horizontal; Horizon.. or like the rungs on a ladder...
Cheese is right , if it is, and should be, a horizontal there probably is no float bowl, but there could be crap in the pickup tubes and in the tank. If you seperate the tank and carb, replace the diaghram and mounting gaskets where the carb bolts to the block.

Yup...and clear out the pickup tube screen, blow out the passages, etc...
Really, we should find out if you have spark immediately after it quits first, to determine if it is an ignition problem or fuel or what. I just know how these things are, and generally the carbs need work when this symptom occurs.
