We are finishing a hallway that has one existing wall that is AWFUL. Can we put a fresh sheet over top of this? Mudding the cracks and imperfections would be a nightmare. Help

Yes you can hang new drywall over old walls w/o tearing out the existing sheetrock or plaster & lath. You need to locate your studs & mark them and be sure to use long enough screws or nails to go through all the way to the studs. Of course you still have to tape & mud your new wall.
Good luck.

I agree. I did exactly that with 1 large wall in our new nursery and 1 12x12 ceiling in our study. Both had popcorn texture that was hard as heck and flaking. The new sheetrock once taped and mudded looks great. Looks best and cost was low. Just the taping and mudding patience needed. Also, you may need to extend electrical boxes out to the surface or replace with new boxes by cutting the old wall open and putting in new ones.
I used 3/8" sheetrock cause it was lighter to hang by 1 person.
