I am just about done with finishing my basement and am ready to order the ceiling tile. When I went to place the order, I wanted to use black ceiling tile for one of the rooms. The salesperson suggested that I rethink that idea because it would look like walking into a cave. I did rethink it but am still leaning towards the black tile.
Most of the rooms in the basement will use white triple step diamond patterned ceiling tiles. However for one room (15' x 35'), I was planning to use black ceiling tiles. The ceilings are 8' high, but will primarily be used as a media room which includes a wet bar area.
The flooring will be mostly a light - medium gray carpet and gray tile with black granite for the wet bar area. The bar will be made of stainless steel (chrome) and glass with a black granite countertop: 2 pieces (lower 36" high and upper 42" high).
The trim will be oak with a deep red mahogany stain and the doors will be white. I dont really like white trim too much and natural oak stains dont look good to me with gray colors. Red oak doors might also present too much red. The walls are painted with a very light gray color.
Recessed lights were used for the ceiling with Juno Black Alzac trims. The trims that are used do not reflect as much light as the others, so when turned on, it is hard to tell where the light is coming from. using black tile, the lights will be camouflaged.
Media rooms should be dark when watching movies. The projector will be mounted from the ceiling onto a 120" screen. The black ceiling will not reflect any light and would make the ceiling unoticable during the movie. In the room, there will be a window and a sliding glass door for the walkout. If I pull up the "black-out" shades during the day, there will be enough natural light to brighten the room.
The purpose of this room is to watch movies and party, but i do not want people to feel claustrophobic. Should I continue to stick with the black ceiling tile or does anyone think otherwise? Sorry for the long post.
Thanks,
Jim

I think it would make the room too dark. I don't think the ceilings in movie theaters are black and they are real high, with an 8' ceiling it would close the room in. I don't think the white or grey tiles would throw too much light during screenings.

Hi,
Ceiling colors (as well as walls and floors) are related with several elements.
As example, a dark ceiling will seem a cave if you are in a library with your lights ON, but for a home theater is different. You need to consider not only the lights (including the light effect of the screen on the ceiling) but also the ceiling texture. Some tile ceiling are matte and other are brilliant, and in this situation a bright color as white, could be a disaster. At last, the ceiling high is other factor.
I guess that color in this room is more than esthetic.
Hope this helps!
