I have a room [8' ceiling] that I want to convert to a library; therefore, I need a lot more light because the room does not have any windows. I plan to add horizontal windows high on the interior walls and build bookcases up to or around the windows.

The exterior walls are brick veneer and I have been unable to find any literature on cutting an opening in the brick veneer. I plan to save, cleanup and use the bricks that I will need to close the opening around the new windows.

My hope is that I will be able to add the new window headers from the inside [i.e., without removing the brick to uncover the header area from the outside - is that logical/reasonable?

Specifically, my question is, what is the best way to remove the brick. Hammer and chisel? Chop saw with a masonary blade? Etc., etc.?

I am comfortable with my carpentary skills; however, I have zero experience with brick work. Counsel will be appreciated.

Thanks, Dub

use a demo saw to cut the out line of the window, try to cut all the way through and break out the bricks in the center, try to line up with the exsisting line of the brick so at the edge of the window you have a full brick on both sides, it should alternate full and half brick down the sides, and install a steel lintel to support the top of the bricks

Frank, thanks a bunch for the reply. I have one question. I stopped at a house under construction and talked to a local brick mason. I think that you both said the same thing but I am not sure because I do not know the terms. He suggested using a "chop" saw, indicating that I should use a 14" masonary blade. Question: Is a "chop" saw the same as the "demo" saw that you recommended?

I'm sure glad that you mentioned the lintel. I know about metal lintels from looking at the brick work on my current house, but that is probably the kind of thing that I would forget since I am not experienced with brick work. Would that be a Home Depot and/or Lowes item, or will I have to seek an outlet that specialized in brick work?
