My husband is wanting to have a large area in our backyard concreted in the area of my son's basketball hoop. He made some calls today and was quoted prices that are way more than we expected (anywhere from $800-$1200). Does anyone have any suggestions about something we could do that would hold up as well as be less expensive?

Get some bids on having asphalt installed.

Frank99 is right, asphalt is much cheaper and common for public basketball courts.

Actually, he did that and it was even more expensive than concrete!

That makes no sense. How many bids did you get? Asphalt is much cheaper than concrete, hence all the asphalt driveways and roads.

How is the access to your backyard, can you get a truck near there, it up or down a steep hill, is there a blacktop plant near you. get more bids on the asphalt, the price you got was because the guy didn't want to do it. blacktop should be 10 - 25% the price of concrete.

The area is 30 x 25 and asphalt quotes are around $800 and the concrete quotes are around $750. The ground has been leveled and the forms are up around the area as well. All they need to do is pour the concrete.

That area gives you 750 sq. ft. they only want $1.00 per foot to pour the concrete, will it be 4" thick 4" stone base and mesh, if it is go for it.
Whats your location?

I live in Georgia. I guess we are going to have to nix the idea because we don't have that kind of money right now. I guess we need to find some alternatives until we can afford the real thing. Suggestions anyone?

Cut the size in half, do an area which you can afford, use town parks.
