I'm going to solder 1/2" copper lines to a pair of roman tub valves. I'm going to remove the valve stem before soldering. The stem has a compression washer at the end, probably made of rubber. Should I also remove the valve seat? Would it be any more difficult to remove the seat later if I solder with it in place?
Do I need a different flux because of brass valve body and copper lines?

If it's indeed rubber it would be best to take it out if you can't wrap it with a wet rag.
As for solder it's not the flux. You want to use silver solder.

Silver solder a plumbing fixture? What about the valve seat? Is it better to remove or leave in place?

You don't need to remove a valve seat to solder, and just use lead-free solder for water supply.
Good Luck!
