I have a quick question. We are getting ready to lay slate tile in our kitchen. The problem comes in because there is already old vinyl flooring in that area. The flooring is approximately 20 years old and doesn't want to come up! We have tried to scrape and have not had success. Can the tile be installed over the vinyl?

If the vinyl is securely on the floor, the tile can most certainly be installed over it. If you have a concrete subfloor, you can get thinset that has a latex additive that makes installation over full spread vinyl perfectly fine. This will be stated on the back of the bag.

In addition to what tiffany said make sure that your vinyl is free of dirt and grease. I also rough up the vinyl using a belt sander with heavy grit sand paper.
