I'm building a room in a now attic space that has a knee wall and slanted roof rafters. I plant to sheet rock after insulating but I notice some inconsistancy in the plumbness of all the rafters. Can you suggest a good method for furing out the rafters so sheetrocking will come out relatively smooth with no rippling ??

You could run the furring strips perpendicular to the rafters and shim them plane to resolve the dilemma.

Put a 4 ft level, or a straight 2"x4" across the joists, and, just build out the high ones with some sort of shim as needed. I've used anything from scrap strips of sheetrock, osb, lath, whatever is available. Just remember to use long enough screws to go at least 3/4" into the stud, not the shim.
Hope that helps ya out.
