Hi Folks;
I hope someone here can give me a little insight for pricing installation work.
My mother lives in The Bx, NY and wishes to have 12in. square tile installed on her kitchen floor and dining alcove. The Alcove is 8ftx 8ft and the kichen is 7 x 10. The present floor is linoleum square tile laided on concrete floor. The lin has to come up, as it is damaged in some places, and brought to the concrete for the new floor.
I would do the work myself, but decided to job this out due to my own time constraints and the fact that with counters the kitchen would require some cutting. Talking equipment rental here.
Now here is my questions. The person whom was recommended to me came and stated he would lift the lin., go to the concrete, obtain and lay the tile. The price would be 1900 dollars and require 4 days work. Does that price sound reasonable?
Thanks in advance for any replies.

For NYC, $14 per sq.ft. ??? Downtown NYC sounds like a hassle. I might be at $20 per sq.ft. if I worked there.

Here in Austin Texas, I'd be a little easier on your budget by a good margin.

$14 per square foot sounds ridiculously high. I'm not a fan of the individual squares, I prefer the sheet linoleum by a 10 to 1 margin. Even in the Bronx don't you have access to Home Depot, Menards, Lowes or other home centers. We have much lower labor rates in Texas as a rule but on Saturday I was in a HD in Houston and saw sheet linoleum in the 70 cents to $1.75 per square foot range and the small squares in the 40 cents to $1.00 range. Labor through their service desk contractors was $7.75 per sq. yard, or 86 cents a square foot. Figure on $2.00 or so per square foot versus the $14 they're quoting you.
Another example, in late 2001 I sold my mothers house in San Francisco when she passed away. The kitchen/dining alcove, about 1/3 larger than yours, we had the linoleum replaced, and 3 areas of the floor replaced for about $1100.
Get a couple of other estimates is my suggestion.
