Flooring Tile - Marble in bathroom

HELP! We are remodeling our bathroom and wanted to lay 12x12 marble tiles on the floor and in the shower. We are being told that this is a bad idea due to marble being slick. Any opinions??

You are right to be concerned. Marble is very beautiful, but will be a problem long term in the bathroom. First, if it's polished marble on the floor, it will be very slippery. Second, marble is a soft, easily damaged stone. Any chemicals or harsh cleaners typically found in a bathroom (shampoo, BLEACH, mouth wash, etc.) will etch or "stain" the surface. Hard water mineral deposits are a problem with marble also. Try a porcelain ceramic instead-very durable, and easy to maintain. Also, installing any natural stone requires much more skill than ceramics.

I've set many bathrooms in marble, granite and travertine, with great success, The key to the stone product is maintenance. I would seal your marble with a product called miracle sealer. In this line of products they have what is called impregnator 11 and porous plus. Porous plus being be a little ex*****ive, about 140 dollars a gallon but well worth the investment. Once a year or so seal your marble and you will never have problems with staining or etching. Keep in mind that when cleaning tile always use mild cleaning products.

As for slippery when wet, why not tile your shower walls in marble and get a nice unglaze porclein tile for your shower floor!! and then your bathroom floor you might want to use both products, maybe some porclein tile with a nice inlay of marble:)
