I plan to pour a 14'x30' cement patio...and then eventually lay slate tile over it.

Normally, you would place expansion joints in the cement when pouring. Should I place expansion joints in the cement if I intend to eventually cover over with tile?

I've been told that expansion joints should not be used in this case unless I run them all the way up through the tile. Otherwise, the tile would definitely crack at the joints.

Any opinion or experience with this?

Exterior expansion joints 12'-16' in both directions and they must follow through the tile. Also an expansion joint at the house if this slab is attached to your house.
