I want to strip lacquer off a piece and restain it but I have to do it indoors. Are there any products I can use that are safe and won't require respirators?

There are water-based strippers available. 3M used to make one. Won't hurt your skin, safe fumes. they tend to work more slowly than methylene chloride, but you can't have everything..
Here's a link to 3M's product.
