Hi - I'm preparing to redo a bathroom and want to replace the 4.5" plastic baseboards with 3" wood baseboards that match the hardwood flooring I've already selected. Under the plastic is a thick brown glue. What is the best way to prepare the wallboard for painting? The original baseboards were put on unfinished drywall, and scraping in a small area has resulted in a less-than-desirable result. Is there a solvent for this kind of goo? Should I tape and apply joint compound over the residual glue (it's at least 1/8" thick in some places)? Thanks for your help.

Scrape and sand off what you can, then mud over it.
