Ok, all worked well until we got all this snow here in Maryland (2-1/2 feet). I went outside to check the unit, found it buried, and iced over. I dug it out, and scraped the ice off it. Now, it seems the outside unit fan will not run. I hear the condenser run, and it releases steam from time to time, (though not much) to defrost the coils. Inside, the whole furnace system runs, gives VERY HOT air, and will not seem to shut off unless I turn off the whole system at the t'stat. The house gets so hot, we have to turn the whole thing off, and open windows. Did I hurt it somehow while digging it out, or scraping the ice off the outside? Can I fix it? I'm pretty handy, but unless I can figure out what's wrong, I'm a bit stuck as to what to do. Suggestions?

Your unit is sensing a frost/ ice build up, and attempting to defrost the outdoor coil. Steam is normal, to test the outdoor fan, run the AC, the outdoor fan will start or after it warms up a bit, (if it has a fan cycle control) or immediately if it doesn't. Switch it back to heat and let it defrost , the outdoor fan shouldn't run while in defrost, this will only last 10 or 15 minutes I believe, the strip heaters will energize on the air handler in the house because the AC will be chilling the coil while the outdoor coil is hot. This is to offset the air temp, so you don't feel the cold air blast...
