Can you paint paneling. If so, what is the process.

Yes.

Essentially, clean with mineral spirits or tsp. Prime and paint. This has been discussed here before. Search on the topic and read the other posts for more information.

my neck is starting to twitch again!!painting paneling is my second biggest pet peeve to painting wallpaper.consider hanging 1/4 inch or 3/8 ich drywall over that paneling that should be outlawed except for the VFW.if you must paint refer to chfite's response.

The reason I decided to try painting the paneling was because so many other people on on this board were happy with the results. There are a few people that absolutely hate paneling and will try to persuade you to put up drywall (my best friend just did this).

The result? I painted the paneling which covers my basement walls. It looks absolutely fabulous! The texture of the paneling (the vertical lines) actually adds to the wall's good looks.

It was a pretty easy job, although it took 4 coats (1 coat of primer and 3 coats of paint) to cover the brown of the paneling. But this is nothing compared to work invovled in drywalling the whole room.

My paneling didn't need to be sanded because it already had a slightly rough texture. If your paneling is smooth and glossy you might want to roughen it up a bit, otherwise the paint won't hold.

Let us know what you decide.

Any of the methylene chloride strippers should do the job.
