What is a refractory in a boiler and should I get an HVAC Tech to fix/replace it?

Im at a loss here in what do you have ????????????
As I know it refractory in a boiler is what the fire box is made out of or some thing like a so called fire brick. The fire box for a gun type oil burner would be made out of refractory. lets just say its something that is a heat-resisting ceramic material;) ED
