I would like to paint my old fireplace insert with glass doors a flat black to resemble wrought iron. it is brass and may or may not have a lacquard finish on it. Can it be done? What to do?

Sherwin Williams sells a product called Kem Bond for priming bare metal not steel. Kilz and Zinsser make primers for painted metal. If your brass metal has a good finish on it, it may be lacquer and qualify as a painted surface for the purposes of priming.

You can clean the insert with mineral spirits to remove grease and grime, it should not damage the lacquer finish. Then prime. Finish with a flat black enamel.

But. If you intend to use this in a fireplace, all bets may be off as you will need to find high temperature resistant materials. Painted items don't usually do well around extreme heat.
