i have an older home that has trim work painted in oil base...what is the best way to prep it....

i sand...with 3 different grits

i was told to use an oil base primer...but that is so messy and ruins my brushes....is there any other type of latex i can use as a primer to make sure my top coat doesnt peal....any help would be greatly appreciated...thanks

Zinsser or Kilz makes excellent primers in latex. Finish with alkyd or latex, as suits your preference.

Any of the kilz products will do, just check the label. A dab of lacquer thinner on latex will soften it immediately, not so with alkyd.
