my deck is about 12 to 15 years old. it has become dark and very slippery when wet. if you pressure wash it, it is clean and non-slippery for about 3 weeks but it then reverts back to being dark and slippery. any suggestions?

You might hava to reseal the deck after you pressure wash it with a good water sealer. For some traction, while the sealer is still wet on your last coat, sprinkle some sand real lightly in high traffic areas and allow it to dry according to instructions.

pkayser,
Unfortunatly, most wood when wet is inherently slippery. And some sealers can even make them more slippery. That nationally advertised brand we all know is parrafin based. Sadly, most sand will wash away in short order. Your bet bet is a non-skid mat for that first step upon exiting your door. One other suggestion, in addition to the pressure washing is to use a cleaner which will kill the possible algae which will make a deck very slippery. I recommend an oxygenated bleach rather than household bleach. After cleaning use a quality oil based stain with water repellency and uv protection.
