I have a 3/4" subfloor with a 1/4" underlayment and a vinyl floor. Can I install a new unfinished hardwood floor directly over the vinyl or should I remove this?

If it was my floor I would drill countersunk holes every 8-12 inches along the joists and screw the floor with 2 1/2", #8, rough threads (not fine threads) drywall screws. This usually gets rid of all present and future squeaks.
From what I have heard, the linoleum will actually act as a nice vapor and noise barrier.
