I'm building a deck 24x10 onto an existing cement deck. Using 2x10s atached to 2x10 ledger board. If i'm going out 10 feet, what is the general rule for overhang that is allowed - using two 2x12s sandwiched together on 4x4 posts. Cement footings are 36" inthe ground, going up 16" using 4x4 posts. How far apart do i have to have my footing in the ground. How far in can I come from the sides of the deck for my first footing

I'd use one at either end and three across the middle where the breaks are in your beam.
So 8' is probably the answer you are looking for.
