The front of my Porch is sinking. The porch holds the support beams for the roof over hang of about five feet. I am considering putting wood decking over the porch. The porch comes out 5 feet from the house foundation. It drops 8" in the 5 feet. I have 3.5" between the porch surfave and the botton of a 2" stoop in the doorway. I have decided not to raise porch and install new footings. Any advise is welcome.
Thanks
John

So if your porch has sunk 8", and the porch provides the support for the roof over it, has your roof also sunk 8"? Why would you consider decking the porch without first correcting the problems of its substructure? That sure seems like a waste of time and material!! (Anything worth cutting down a tree for is worth doing right!!)
quote:
Originally posted by John1947:

I corrected the roof support posts years ago the porch has not sunk any in about 5 years.

Guess it depends on what you did to correct the roof supports. Did you run continuous posts from the bottom of the roof to pier blocks set in concrete, then attach the deck to those posts? If so, then the deck is no longer supporting the roof.
quote:
Originally posted by John1947:

I AM SORRY I WASTED YOUR TIME. I CONTACTED A CONTRACTOR AND HE SAID TO USE PRESSURE TREATED 2X4 CUT TO ALLOW A 1.5 INCH DROP. ANCHOR THEM TO THE PORCH WITH CEMENT LAGS. FASTEN 1X6 CEDAR BOARDS USING COATRED SCREWS.

The answer the contractor gave you, was sure different then the original question you asked. All he told you to do was put in shim joists. I think you should have listened to Lefty.

THANKS YOU ARE RIGHT. I GAVE DETAILS ABOUT THE PORCH THAT WERE NOT RELEVANT AS TO HOW YOU DECK OVER A CEMENT SURFACE THAT IS SLOPING 8" IN 5 FEET WHEN YOU ONLY HAVE A 3.5 INCH CLEARENCE FROM THE SURFACE TO THE DOOR STOOP. CONSIDERING YOU NEED SOME DROP IN 5 FEET TO ALLOW RUN OF OF WATER. HOW DO YOU GET THE DECKING TO FIT?
