I am replacing a deck but want to change the construction to a drop beam, with 12" cant. But I also want to support a 16 ft roof off the end of the cant. The joists will be 2"x6"x8' with the beam at 7'. The 4x4 posts for the roof will be attached to the joist and I'm thinking that placing a 45 degree 4x4 down to the beam post would help carry the load. Has anyone done something similar?

Please clarify what you're talking about here. Are you talking about the deck, or the cover over the deck? And the dimentions -- you mention joists that are 8' long, but a roof that is 16'. Is this thing 8' X 16', or what? I'm a little lost.
quote:
Originally posted by Jon in N CA:
