I am installing new 3/4" white oak. I am trying to match 10 year old white oak floors finished with oil based poly. I applied MixWax Natural #209 stain to the new, sanded floors this past week-end. The color is just slightly darker than the old floors. What can I do to slightly lighten the floors, rub with mineral spirits or sand lightly? I have noticed also that the old floors have a slightly rose hue. Will this hue happen with the new floors after I apply the poly? I am going to cover the new floors with water based poly.

David,

The redish hue is the ambering of the oilbase poly and will not happen with waterbase. With waterbase poly the white oak will get a slightly darker brown from the wood fading from UV's. It's best to buff the floor with a 120 grit screen to lighten the stain. If you use paint thinner to lighten the stain than you need to wait for the solvents to evaporate before using waterbase poly.
