I am enlarging a porch deck from 6 x 6 to 8x8 but am constrained by existing post locations (one sits on top of 4' retaining wall next to driveway (can't put a post in driveway!)
4x6 posts(2, about 30" high)), 4x8 beam(8 foot) parrellel to house.
PROBLEM: to center deck to door, it will extend about 18" from location of one of the post positions available - would require beam to cant about that far off end of post. All I have read indicates a 12" max for beam end off last post. Like many decks, this one will be a bit overbuilt with hurricane hangers and thru bolts used wherever possible but I am concerned about code.
Any acceptable way to handle this?

Dennis:
Check with your local planning dept or building permit dept. Many parts of the country allow a 24" cantilever. don't know where you live, but they can help you. Good Luck
