My permit requires me to keep 31 feet from the posts of my deck to the property line. Per my design, this cuts into my deck by as much as 3ft (planning on building an 18x11 deck) What sort of overhang/cantelever can I get away with to keep my original design (thereby setting my posts back a bit)? I've got a total of four pairs of 2x10 beams spaced within the 18 ft length. Your thoughts?

Most permits and codes will only allow a 2' cantilever, no matter how big your beams are.
I would however, visit with your permit dept and see what they say. They are going to know your trying to beat the system. Good Luck

Jack is right -- ask the folks at the bldg. dept. before you start. 2 feet is probably all that they will allow, but it will be their inspector who will be telling you if it's right or wrong.
