hello,
my deck is 20x12. how long should the band joists be in regards to showing the butted seams? as long as possible as long as they are straight? or can you not get away with hiding the seam(s)? also, i read here 2 guys prefer a 16d nail spacing while another didn't space. i'm laying them diagonally and i read a quarter inch - why so much? what would happen if i didn't space my diagonals?

thanks alot

The joints can show as long as they break on a post or on the wall. If they break would be less than 4' to 6' I might bring it back to 8'. It's your design so you may have to make the call, but since you're going 20', use 2 10's and break them on a post. Use a full 12' on the ends.

The treated southern yellow pine decking that we get here in the heartland comes very wet (fresh from the pond). 90% of the people I know who build decks here do not space deck boards at all. Last week we built a deck without spacing. Within 2 days there was 1/4" gap between boards. This really depends how wet/dry your material is when you put it down.
